Getting it Right: The diagnosis & treatment of AD/HD and other attentional difficulties.
Created by Frances E. Steinberg, Ph.D. 41 minutes running time
Part I. The Differential
Diagnosis of AD/HD.
There are many reasons an individual might not pay attention. The diagnosis of AD/HD
must be made after a thorough process of inclusion and exclusion of other factors. The
characteristic features of AD/HD are detailed and differentiated from other causes
of poor attention such as eating and sleep difficulties, abuse and emotional stress,
and behaviour problems. An assessment protocol is suggested, and categories of treatment
are delineated.
Part II. Creative Strategies for Working with Attentional Difficulties.
Individuals with attentional problems have different strengths, weaknesses, and patterns
of processing. The concept of attentional controls is introduced, and difficulties
in attention are separated into mental energy, processing control, and production
control problems. Concrete, practical strategies for how to work with each type
of attentional control are provided.
