Frances E. Steinberg, Ph.D., psychologist, received her doctorate from the Johns Hopkins University in 1975. She was awarded the Outstanding Teacher of the Year award during her tenure as Assistant Professor at the University of New Mexico. Frances has worked in a variety of settings including special schools for emotionally and learning disabled students, private practice, rape crisis centres, and pediatric clinics and is internationally renowned as a trainer. She served as Project Manager for the New Zealand Workforce Development Training Project on Involving Families in Mental Health. In addition to authoring the professional books listed below, Frances has produced the DVD, Getting it Right: The Diagnosis and Treatment of AD/HD and other Attentional Difficulties, written a novel, The Pocket Messiah, and illustrated its accompanying storybook, Tales from the Pocket Messiah.
Richard G. Whiteside, MSW received his Masters in Social Work from Atlanta University
in the United States in 1977, followed by post-graduate training at the Family Therapy
Institute of Washington, DC. with Jay Haley and Cloe Madanes. After moving to New
Zealand in 1994, Rick developed the Family Therapy Team at Waitemata DHB where he
also served as Service Clinical Director for Child, Youth, and Family Mental Health. Rick was
on the Practitioner’s Reference Group of the NZ Mental Health Commission and is a
member of AAMFT and the Training Division of IFTA. He is the author of The Art of
Using and Losing Control: Adjusting the Therapeutic Stance.
Together Frances and Rick have written Whispers from the East, When Your Lover Leaves
You, Working with Difficult Clients, Working with Difficult Children and Adolescents,
Creating Partnerships, Positive Positioning, and Becoming Dragon. They have also
produced two new interactive CD-ROM training courses—Family Therapy 1-2-3 and Tough
Teens/Challenging Children–and have just released the e-guide version of When Your
Lover Leaves You.
